SDI personnel have conducted numerous large‐scale topographic surveys in a variety of
terrain conditions including many challenging environmentally sensitive areas,
common to that within the State of Florida and surrounding islands. Surveys have
been conducted for agencies such as the Florida Department of Transportation, South
Florida Water Management District, and Florida Department of Environmental
Protection. Depending on the intent of the project as well as the location and accuracy
requirements, SDI will utilize a variety of methodologies and equipment technologies.
Real‐Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS technology is extensively used for both small and largescale
topographic data collection. The technology provides an effective tool for
mapping areas very efficiently with high degrees of horizontal and vertical accuracy.
In areas not conducive for GPS survey methodologies, such as beneath tree canopies or
other high vegetation, field crews will employ conventional methodologies such as
total station with data collector or level rod and chain. Crews are always equipped
with the tools to successfully complete a project and are trained to expect unforeseen
conditions. SDI has utilized a variety of vehicle types for access and operations in most
any terrain condition including four‐wheel drive vehicles, ATV’s, airboats and marsh
buggies.
